She is the most underrecognized woman in this collection. That is the point.
Tammi Terrell — born Thomasina Winifred Montgomery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1945 — recorded some of the most beloved duets in Motown history alongside Marvin Gaye. Ain't No Mountain High Enough. Your Precious Love. You're All I Need to Get By. Her voice was the warmth underneath everything.
In 1967, she collapsed in Marvin Gaye's arms onstage at Hampden-Sydney College, Virginia. She was twenty-two. She had a brain tumor. She died in 1970 at twenty-four, having recorded her final album lying flat on a stretcher in the studio because she could no longer sit up.
She was from Philadelphia.
This print catches her in three-quarter profile — green-tinted bob, warm halftone field behind her, the quietest expression of the four. She isn't performing. She's just there, completely herself, before the world took everything from her too soon.
Sovereign. Unbothered. Philadelphia, 1945–1970.
