Eartha Kitt was born on a cotton plantation in South Carolina in 1927, the daughter of a sharecropper. She was abandoned at age eight. By her thirties she was performing at the Moulin Rouge in Paris, recording in seven languages, and being described by Orson Welles as the most exciting woman in the world.

In 1968, she was invited to a White House luncheon by Lady Bird Johnson. She spoke out against the Vietnam War. The CIA opened a file on her. She was blacklisted from American entertainment for nearly a decade.

She kept working.

This print catches her on the sofa — green fur, yellow-green polka dots, red wall, black heel — at absolute ease. Not performing ease. In it.
