The Split, 1971 is a Pop Art archive print of Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier — rendered from a promo poster before their first fight, March 8, 1971, Madison Square Garden, New York City.
This was not just a boxing match. It was the most culturally contested sporting event in American history. Two undefeated heavyweights. One undisputed heavyweight title. A Black community genuinely divided on who should carry their image into the ring.
Ali represented the counterculture, draft resistance, Black pride as defiance. Frazier represented the working man, the quiet grinder, the one who earned it without saying a word. The fight was a proxy for something larger than sport — and both men knew it.
The graphic is a halftone treatment set against a graffiti field in cyan, magenta, lime, and red.
The vintage dune base does something specific: its warm sand tones echo the sepia of the halftone treatment, pulling both men into the fabric rather than onto it. The figures seem to emerge from the garment itself.
This is not a boxing graphic. It is an archive.
